Offline Mode with the Bambi NEMT Driver App

Last updated: June 1, 2026

If a driver loses cell service mid-trip — in a rural area, a hospital parking garage, or a dead zone between towns — the Bambi NEMT Driver App keeps working without interruption. Drivers can move through every step of a trip offline: status changes, signatures, pickups, dropoffs, and cancellations. Everything is saved on the device and automatically syncs to dispatch the moment connection returns. No special mode to enable — it just works.

What works offline:

  • All status changes: En Route, I'm at Pickup, Transporting, At Dropoff, Complete Trip, Cancel Trip

  • Driver and passenger signature capture (including Signed By selection)

  • Trip cancellations

  • GPS location recording along the route

What the driver sees when offline:

A black banner appears at the top of the screen: "Your device is offline. It seems there is a problem with your internet connection." The driver continues tapping through their trip exactly as normal. A small cloud icon with a number appears in the top-right corner showing how many changes are queued on the device waiting to sync.

To view the pending changes queue:

Tap the cloud icon to see a list of every action waiting to upload — time, passenger, and action type. The screen reads: "Changes are saved on your device and will sync when you're back online. You can keep using the app while offline."

What happens when signal returns:

The app automatically uploads queued changes in order with no action needed from the driver. The pending-changes counter counts down as each item syncs. When all changes are through, the screen shows "All changes synced." Dispatch sees every status change and signature populate with the original timestamps — the time the driver actually tapped the button, not the sync time.

Tips for dispatchers and owners:

  • A burst of status changes arriving at once is normal when a driver comes out of a dead zone. Timestamps reflect when the driver acted, so records remain accurate.

  • Ask drivers to open the pending-changes screen if you want to confirm a sync is complete.

  • Reporting, on-time performance, and billing data all use actual action timestamps, not sync timestamps.

Frequently asked questions

Does the driver need to turn on Offline Mode?

No. It's always active. If signal drops, the app automatically holds changes locally and syncs when connection is restored.

What if the phone dies or the app crashes while offline?

Queued changes are stored on the device and will sync the next time the app opens with a connection. They are not lost when the app closes.

Does GPS still track without cell service?

Yes. GPS operates independently of cellular coverage. Location is recorded throughout the route and uploads with the rest of the queue when signal returns.

Does this work on both iOS and Android?

Yes.
